Know Your Banking Fees] How much does your bank charge for ATM fees, overdraft fees or return check
fees? If you’re not certain, here are some things you can do to find out.
[Pictures showing a couple and a father
holding a baby on the phone with the bank] The first step is to call customer
service. That’s right. Skip the website and go straight for human contact. Ask to
speak to someone about your account fees.
[Pictures showing people reconciling their bank statements.]
The second thing that you need to do is make sure to ask about the fees that are
directly related to your account, not general fees. You may have to provide your
account number for reference, so be sure that you have it handy.
[Pictures showing people on the phone with
customer service.] Ask the customer service rep to put the
fees in writing. If you talk to someone on the phone, ask for an e-mail that
outlines the fees that you discussed, but also take your own notes, including
the name of the person that you spoke with.
[Slide - Ask About Account
Fees - overdraft fees, a return check fee, a wire transfer fee, a monthly
account fee, a minimum balance fee, debit card transaction fees, ATM fees, other
additional check fees.] The fees that you need to
ask about are the overdraft fees, a return check fee, a wire transfer fee, a
monthly account fee, a minimum balance fee, debit card transaction fees, ATM
fees, and other additional check fees.
[Pictures showing a couples
looking over their bank statements] Regardless of what you learn,
check your statement monthly for fees and ask questions about any that seem out
of place.
[Lamaria Colclough] Most importantly, pay attention to all communication coming
from your bank. You may be receiving important notices about new fees that apply
to you.
