New
Classes for Child Care Providers 2010
Where can I get the child care training hours?
The University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service, in partnership with
the Division of Child Care and Early Childhood Education, is making it easier
for you to get 10 hours of classes during the year. Check the
schedule (PDF) for exact times and locations, or
contact your
county
office of the Cooperative Extension Service.
Topics for 2010 include:
Food and Nutrition
Unit #1. "Don’t let outbreaks take over: Handling a
foodborne illness" - Foodborne illness is a serious public
health concern that can affect everyone within a childcare
facility. Children are especially at high risk of becoming sick
with a foodborne illness. This lesson will equip participants
with the knowledge to recognize, handle, and report foodborne
outbreaks in the classroom.
Unit #2. "Be a Model of Good Health" - As a child care
provider, you know that children are watching you. But did you
know you can be a good influence for their parents, too? Use the
ideas in this lesson to role model healthy eating habits for
both children and their parents.
Health and Safety
Unit #3. Keeping Kids Safe from the Superbug called "MRSA"
- MRSA (or Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is a
new superbug that is hard to treat, and we are seeing more of
it. This lesson will teach participants why MRSA can be deadly.
Participants will also learn how to identify MRSA symptoms and
prevent it from spreading. Participants will come away with
renewed respect for keeping hands, surfaces, and little bodies
squeaky clean.
Unit #4. Yoga for Kids: Helping children be sane in an
insane world - Believe it or not, childhood can be
stressful. But research now shows that yoga for kids is a
wonderful way for children of all ages to reduce stress and
promote wellness. This lesson will teach participants the
benefits of yoga and provide resources to get you started.
Whether you want to learn a few simple moves or become a
certified instructor, this lesson will give you the resources
you need.
Resource Management
Unit #5. "Money on the Bookshelf" - Money on
the Bookshelf is a program designed to teach young children
about money while also helping with literacy. The program
focuses on children’s books. Lesson guides have activities and
discussion tips to highlight the money ideas presented in each
book.
Unit #6. "Saving Money on Food" - Food costs are one
of the largest flexible expense categories for early childhood
education centers and for families. Discover strategies to cut
expenses and make the most of a grocery budget.
Child Development
Unit #7. "Understanding Autism: Teaching tools you can use
in the classroom" - Autism affects many children. That is
why it is so important to learn proper teaching techniques.
Teaching a child with special needs is sometimes difficult if
you are not prepared. In this lesson, you will learn principles
and tools that you can apply with all children.
Unit #8. "Don’t quit: Avoid Burnout" - Work stress can
arise in many different situations, from working with parents,
to everyday duties and activities. This lesson will discuss how
to turn a negative situation into a positive. Learn how to avoid
stress in day-to-day routines, and to work efficiently and
effectively with parents.
Unit #9. "Big Lessons from Little Books" - Great
lessons about life and relationships can be taught from simple
and beautiful storybooks. When used effectively, little books
can make big differences. They can both entertain and educate.
Unit #10. "The Parenting Pyramid" - Many parents spend
much of their time trying to correct their children’s behavior.
But this doesn’t have to be the case. This lesson will teach
ideas for helping things go right in the first place, rather
than simply reacting once something has gone wrong.
The Best Care will provide you with verified training through the Arkansas
Early Childhood Professional Development System.
