Family Life
Don’t Miss Discovery Point Video
Audio/Video Script:
Dr. Wally:
"Hey, it’s the Montoya family!"
Family: "Hi!"
Dr. Wally: "It looks like you’re out on an expedition!"
Child: "Yes!"
Dr. Wally: "Out learning new things and exploring new things in the
world, huh?"
Children: "Yeah."
Dr. Wally: "What’s the net for?"
Child: "Catching butterflies!"
Dr. Wally: "Really! Would you like to catch one of these? Look at these!
All these butterflies!"
Older Sister: "Which is your favorite?"
Dr. Wally: "Yeah, do you have a favorite? Oh that one! Look at all those
great butterflies! So when you go out on a trip you get to learn about
butterflies or bugs or plants. So when you go on a hike like this, what are some
of the things you like to look for?"
Child: "Deer."
Dad: "Ladybugs"
Child: "Birds"
Dr. Wally: "Yeah, all kinds of things. That’s great. Don’t you love
learning about new things and seeing new places?"
Family: "Yes!"
Dr. Wally: "In fact, I wonder if each family probably has something that
they are especially interested in. Could that be true? Suzy, how about you? Is
there something that you like to learn about?"
Suzy: "Kindergarten."
Dr. Wally: "And in Kindergarten you probably learn lots of things, don’t
you? You get to learn to write and say your alphabet and color. That’s great.
Carlos, what do you like to learn about?"
Carlos: "Drawing."
Dr. Wally: "Drawing. Anything special you like to draw?"
Carlos: "Harry Potter."
Dr. Wally: "Maybe you’ll be an illustrator when you grow up, huh? How
about Brenda? What do you like to learn about?"
Brenda: "I like to learn about math."
Dr. Wally: "Math! Wow. So probably you like to measure things or add or
do all kinds of things with numbers, can’t you. That’s great. Gabby? How about
you?"
Gabby: "I like to read and collect state quarters."
Dr. Wally: "Isn’t it amazing all the different kinds of things there are
to learn. But let’s ask what your mom and dad like to learn too. Mom, what do
you like to learn about?"
Mom: "I love to read books together with my kids. We always go to the
library. I like to teach them Spanish. We work together on Spanish so they can
write in Spanish and read in Spanish."
Dr. Wally: "So they’ll know two languages, don’t they? Dad, how about
you? What do you like to learn about?"
Dad: "I’m always learning something knew. Even the things that I’m
supposed to know I’m always learning how to do them faster."
Dr. Wally: "You’re an engineer, aren’t you?"
Dad: "That’s right."
Dr. Wally: "So I bet there are always new things that you need to learn
to do your job right, huh?"
Dad: "Yes."
Dr. Wally: "And do the kids know that you’re excited about learning?"
Mom and Dad: "Yes!"
Dr. Wally: "Good."
Mom: "We learn together."
Dr .Wally: "Can you think of other things you like to do as a family
besides hikes like this? What are some of the things you do to be learning new
things?"
Mom: "We like to learn about new places and visit new places. We have
friends who tell us they went to a special place they liked and then we make the
goal to go see it."
Dr. Wally: "You can learn about those places in a lot of ways-on the web,
in books, or friends."
Dad: "Last time we went to Mexico we went to the range and the kids
really enjoyed it. We went to the tops of those places and had a great view.
Dr. Wally: "Boy! I bet that was fascinating!"
Child: "Yeah. We got a lot of gifts."
Dr. Wally: "And I bet you learned a lot while you were there too, huh?"
Children: "Yes."
Dr. Wally: "That’s great. You know, when learning is fun we just keep
learning for a lifetime, huh? If you give your children choices, let them figure
out what they’re interested in and then you help them. What about when the
children make mistakes? What do you do when they make mistakes? Do you just get
mad at them?"
Children: "No."
Mom: "No. We just try again."
Dr. Wally: "Yeah! We learn from our mistakes, don’t we?"
Family: "Yes!"
Dr. Wally: "Well, it sounds like life is a big adventure! It’s sure good
to see you. I hope you have a hike. In fact Suzy, maybe you better take that in
case you see some butterflies. Okay?"
Suzy: "Thank you."
Dr. Wally: "You’re welcome. Have a good hike. Bye!"
Family: "Good bye Dr. Wally!"
