Human Development

Human Development is the amazing process that takes us from a single cell through all the experiences of life. It involves how we learn and grow and become both like all other humans and also somehow distinct from every other person. When we understand human development we can grow in more healthy ways and we can help those we love do the same.

The growing child The first few years of a child's life are amazing. A baby learns to relate to other people, to express emotion, to move about, and to talk. There are things that every parent and caregiver can do to help children develop.

Ages and Stages

The teen years The teens years are a time of challenge, change and hope. During these years, youth are maturing physically, mentally, and socially. It is a time of exploration, growing independence, and expanding boundaries and opportunities. It is a time for exploring adult roles and responsibilities while under the careful tutelage and loving guidance of caring adults.

Productive adulthood  Adulthood is the time when we carry on much of the business of our lives. We love, we work, and we continue to learn. When we do all these things in healthy ways, we have greater well-being and make greater contributions.

The golden years There is great diversity among adults in later life. For many it is a time to relinquish old roles and take on new ones. Retirement may allow time to pursue hobbies, travel, or spend time with family and friends. For some later adulthood may be a time of gradual physical decline and loss of independent functioning. But for all, it is a time for reflecting on one's life and its purpose.
