[Title Slide – Parenting Journey – Welcome to Wellness; Dr. Wally Goddard – Family Life, U of A Division of Agriculture. A Parenting Journey.]

[Dr. Wally Goddard] You know I think one of the hardest things we ever do is parenting. It is so challenging. I mean children have so many needs, so many demands and at the same time, relatively little understanding. So parenting is one of the biggest challenges we ever face, and we can either see that as very frustrating, or we can say, hmmm, being a parent is one of the best ways in the world for me to grow and develop greater compassion and understanding and more effectiveness as an adult.

And you know what the research says about parenting is kind of different from our usual ways of acting with children. In fact I like to say that the natural parent is an enemy to children are automatic ways drive children crazy and unfortunately they also drive us crazy. So in Arkansas Cooperative Extension we have created something that we call a Parenting Journey. [Picture showing Parenting Journey publication] And the Parenting Journey summarizes the six points that were defined by the federal government in the 1990’s as the essentials for effective parenting.

[Dr. Goddard] We take each of those six and we talk about each of them. And describe what we really need to do to work effectively with children. Let me just give you a quick overview, like for instance, the welcome to wellness [picture of Welcome to Wellness on the Parenting Journey publication]. [Dr. Goddard] A lot of the things we do to be healthy and balanced turn out to actually make us more frustrated and more stressed, and so we suggest some ways that a person can be a more balanced, healthy, peaceful person, so they’ll be more effective in parenting. [Picture of Welcome to Wellness steps 1 - 3 on the Parenting Journey publication]

Or let me give you one more example. Live in love land. [Picture of Welcome to Wellness step5 on the Parenting Journey publication] That’s our second community. It’s really about nurturing children. When we show children love and understanding, it makes such a big difference and yet as parents our automatic reaction is usually to try to correct and fix and straighten out and even punish children for bad behavior. And what the research says is that punishment isn’t always very educational. Rather there are a lot of other things we should do.

And so there are six different areas. Enjoy the view at insight, find your way to character heights.  [Picture of Welcome to Wellness Parenting Journey publication] These six different areas that are essential to parenting and each of them is considered in turn in this map and also in this supporting materials that are available to you through your Cooperative Extension Service.
