[Dr. Wally Goddard] You might not know there have been some exciting discoveries made in the
areas of personal development. The research shows that there are some really
important things that make a big difference in whether we're happy or not happy.
And they're not always things you would expect.
We have tried to take that research and summarize it in a program we call The
Personal Journey [Dr. Goddard shows The Personal Journey publication]. And The Personal Journey has like six or seven main ideas that
can make a big difference in our happiness, but I want to talk about the first
one.
[Title Slide – The Personal Journey, Life is a Journey Full of Choices.] The first one is Enjoy Today. Enjoy Today. In the research in psychology,
that's called "savoring". It's noticing and enjoying, celebrating and
appreciating the simple, ordinary day-to-day parts of life. And I guess I
learned savoring very well recently from a man who's an older guy. An older guy
who we ran into at a church in rural Arkansas.
He was called on to offer a prayer and when he stood to pray he said,
"Heavenly father, we're so grateful that when we woke up this morning, we could
see!" And then he said "We went in the kitchen and we found we had running
water. And we went in the pantry and there was food there!" So this good man
ticked through these very simple things that we all have, but rarely notice or
think about.
So the research says, and when we get good at noticing and enjoying those
simple things it makes us happier.
So there's one key from The Personal Journey and I hope you'll visit with
your county agent and find materials there that will help you in your
personal journey.
