[Announcer] Welcome to Thoughts on Aging with Dr. LaVona Traywick,
Assistant Professor of Gerontology with the University of Arkansas Division of
Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service.
[Dr. LaVona Traywick] Do you ever stop long enough to reflect on life? We hear it
said "you need to stop and smell the roses", but how many of us really do that?
Our society has become so busy we don’t take time to smell pretty
flowers, so I doubt we take enough time for self-reflection.
There is a difference between being busy and being productive, so at
the end of your life, or even just the end of the day, were you
successful? What is your definition of a life
well-spent? Mark Tabb wrote “The one thing I really want out
of life is to live in such a way that my life has a lasting
influence on the lives of the people around me, an influence that
will last beyond one generation…No life will ever be wasted when its
character keeps walking around in the lives of those who were
touched by it” (Living with Less, The Upside of Downsizing your Life
by Mark Tabb).
If your definition of a life well spent includes making positive
impacts on those around you, you may find that you have to rearrange
your life and change your definition of success to make your goal a
reality. Just a thought. Thanks for listening to mine.
