[Announcer] Welcome to Thoughts on Aging with Dr. LaVona Traywick,
Assistant Professor of Gerontology with the University of Arkansas Division of
Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service.
[Dr. LaVona Traywick] In their book, Everyday Blessings, Myla and Jon Kabat-Zinn
say, "When a child, no matter how old, feels our acceptance, when he feels our
love, not just for his easy-to-live-with, lovable, attractive self, but also for
his difficult, repulsive, exasperating self, it feeds him and frees him to
become more balanced and whole. Children can face all sorts of difficulties and
challenges if they can come back to the well of our unconditional love."
Wow, what a mandate. This seems
much easier with small children, but with adults! They are supposed to be
adults! Here is the challenge, the next time your child, albeit an adult child,
does something that makes you hopping mad, see it as an opportunity to be the
safe place for your child. This, of course, does not mean that you rescue your
child from their trouble. Life will provide consequences. You provide
discussion--in due time. It is your acceptance and love that assures your adult
child that he or she has a safe refuge while he or she is still learning, growing,
and figuring out life as an adult.
[Announcer] Thank you for listening to Thoughts on Aging with Dr. LaVona
