Assistant Professor of Gerontology with the University of Arkansas Division of
Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service.
[Dr. LaVona Traywick] With winter weather here in Arkansas, ice will most likely happen. Hopefully
not in a major ice-storm like in years past, but ice on the roadways and
sidewalks is almost certain. If ice is in the forecast, here are some tips you
should remember:
Intelligence - you need to know the weather and ice conditions before
you go outside. Know where you are going, an alternative route in case the road
is closed, and how to call for help. Be smart about your decisions on whether to
venture on the roads if you do not have to go.
Clothing - wear the proper clothing to prevent hypothermia in the
winter. Layers are helpful for both the convenience of adjusting to the
temperature difference of being indoors verses outdoors as well as for extra
warmth. Wear a waterproof jacket if there is any precipitation. And don’t forget
your shoes. Some shoes may be more stylish, but if there is ice, go for sturdy
and safe. You can always change your shoes once you get inside where you are
going.
Equipment - have the proper equipment. If you use a cane, be sure
to take it. Does your car have snow tires? Is there an ice scraper for the
windshield inside the vehicle? Do you have a snow shovel and salt? Think about
the equipment that you would need in advance and have them on hand so that when
the snow and ice come, you already have the equipment you need.
So when there is ice ( I C E ) in the forecast, think Intelligence, Clothing, and
Equipment.
