[Announcer] Welcome to Thoughts on Aging with Dr. LaVona Traywick,
Assistant Professor of Gerontology with the University of Arkansas Division of
Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service.
[Dr. LaVona Traywick] Did you know Medicare fraud costs taxpayers more than $60
billion each year? Did you know that there are almost 500,000 Medicare
beneficiaries in Arkansas? The most effective way to stop Medicare fraud is for
every beneficiary to know how to prevent it. The Arkansas Senior Medicare
Patrol, or SMP, states that prevention is as simple as 3 steps.
First, protect your Medicare number - don't give it out over
the phone or at your front door.
Second, detect fraud by being vigilant - read your Medicare
summary or Explanation of Benefits to make sure you received the services or
products that Medicare has already paid for.
And third, report any unexplained billing or suspicious
activity by vendors or salespersons at your door or on the phone.
So do your part to prevent Medicare fraud, protect, detect,
and report. Thanks for listening.
