Thoughts on Aging
Aging Myth: "Retirement is Bad for You"

(1 minutes: 46 seconds) Audio File Link WMA (audio only)

Audio/Video Script:

Dr. LaVona Traywick
Assistant Professor - Gerontology

[Announcer] Welcome to Thoughts on Aging with Dr. LaVona Traywick, Assistant Professor of Gerontology with the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service.

[Dr. LaVona Traywick] Have you ever heard people say that retirement is bad for your health?  A lot of people believe this, but it isn't true.

More than 90% of people currently retired report they are "very" or "moderately" happy.

Research also shows that if you do not include people who retired for ill health conditions, retirement actually has health benefits.

With any venture in life, retirement is often better if you take a little time to plan for it. I am not just talking about financial planning, which is important, but also planning for social activities, engaging in the community, and keeping mentally stimulated.  The University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture has several programs that do just that, such as Master Gardeners and Extension Homemakers Clubs.  Civic organizations, advocacy groups, hospitals, libraries and schools are other places a person who has retired can use their skills to better the lives of others.

So if you are currently retired, about to retire, or just thinking about retirement sometime in the future, don’t let the myth that retirement is bad for you keep you from enjoying the life ahead of you.

Thanks for listening to my thoughts on aging.
