Small Steps: Commit to Making a Change - January 26, 2012

Audio/Video Script:

Dr. LaVona Traywick
Assistant Professor - Gerontology

[Announcer] Welcome to Thoughts on Aging with Dr. LaVona Traywick, Assistant Professor of Gerontology with the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service.

[Dr. LaVona Traywick]  Most consumers are capable of improving health practices and financial management. However, positive change requires commitment, motivation, action, and time. The Transtheoretical Model of Change describes five major stages:

  1. Pre-contemplation – This is where you unaware that a problem even exists
  2. Contemplation – This is where you gain knowledge about your alternatives
  3. Preparation – This is where you plan and you gain your skills to make your changes
  4. Action – making the change
  5. Maintenance – This is where you sustain the change and you enjoy the benefits

Now, you can apply this theory in your own journey toward improving health and building wealth:

  • Start by identifying where you are. Is there something you need to change? What stage are you in?
  • And then, make a commitment. It's better if you write it down. Write a statement. “I will………” and then fill in the blank.
  • Find your motivation. What inspires you? Why do you want to make this change?
  • And then, transition. Transition into the new behavior. Identify the negative behavior and think of a positive counterpoint.

Your commitment is a critical step in creating your desired future. Commitment gives you the drive to move through the stages of change. This is just one strategy that can help you reach personal finance and health goals.
