Choose Healthy Snacks from Major Food Groups

• About 20% of a child’s energy and nutrients come from snacks. Growing children need more food and energy than they can eat during a single meal.
• Set a good example - Help your child choose healthy snacks by choosing them for yourself and eating together.
• Plan ahead - Keep healthy snacks on hand.
• Make it easy - Store snacks in easy-to-reach places.

• Grain Group - Pretzels, graham crackers, whole grain lower-sugar cereals and crackers
• Fruit Group - Fruit slices or chunks, dried fruit, 100% fruit juices
• Vegetable Group - Chopped, raw vegetables and lower-fat dressing
• Milk Group - Lower-fat cheese, lower-fat milk and yogurt
• Meat Group - Peanut butter, hard boiled eggs
