Journey to Wellness - Graphic of a triangle with a runner, and apple, carrot and grain. The Journey

Employees who participate in Journey to Wellness can earn "wellness points." "Wellness points" can be used to "purchase" incentives from the "Wellness Store."

Activities that earn "wellness points":

  • Personal Wellness Profile 100 points
  • Aerobic Points 150 points
  • Healthy Habits 150 points
  • Wellness Education Participation 100 points
  • Preventive Exams 50 points
  • Risk Factor Maintenance or Reduction 150 points
  • Overall Wellness Rating 100 points
  • Overall Fitness Rating 50 points
  • Participation in Extension Challenge 75 points
  • Timely Activity Entry 75 points

Personal Wellness Profile. Self-reported assessments – These, when used in conjunction with screenings, give a good health assessment, baseline and evaluation perspective. Participants must fill out a Personal Wellness Profile evaluation annually to be eligible for incentives. These will be administered every July. You must take two, one at the beginning of the program (baseline) and another at the end, to measure results and to earn 100 points. No points will be awarded for only one evaluation. These include fasting blood draw and blood pressure evaluation.

Picture of a lady jogging.Aerobic miles. Equivalents for various exercises that equal one mile will be the same as we use in Walk Across Arkansas. Other events throughout the year, like Walk Across Arkansas, Strong Woman, Reshape Yourself, yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, step, dance and water aerobics and others, count as aerobic miles. Exercise at wellness and fitness centers will also count toward aerobic miles. 10 miles equal 1 point.

Healthy Habits. Points will be earned for maintaining six or more of these 95% of the time.

  • Sleep 7-8 hours
  • Stop smoking or remain stopped

  • Moderate exercise for 30+ minutes most days

  • Eat healthy

  • Alcohol in moderation, or avoidance

  • Achieve and maintain healthy weight |

  • Balance stress and pressure with adequate time for rest, relaxation and recreation

  • Use seat belts
  • Current immunizations

These are self-reported weekly on intranet report. To earn 150 points, the individual must report maintenance of six healthy habits 48 of 52 weeks.

Wellness Education Participation. Points will be awarded for attending Extension or approved wellness education classes, workshops or in-service trainings. These will be offered on an ongoing basis. At least 12 wellness education classes will be offered each year – some offered via internet. Ten points can be earned for each class completed, for a maximum of 100 points.

Preventive Exams (self-reported). This includes physicals, mammograms, pap smears, dental, eye, psas, etc. Fifty points can be earned yearly for undergoing a physical exam plus at least one other exam not included in physical (dental, visual, etc.).

Risk Factor Maintenance or Reduction. Cholesterol, serum glucose, blood pressure and body composition are areas of risk related to most chronic diseases. Individuals will select three areas for monitoring. Each of the three areas selected is worth 50 points if indexes are reduced to or maintained at healthy levels. A fasting blood draw and blood pressure evaluation at start of program and at one-year anniversary will be required.

Overall Wellness Rating. Employees will be awarded points for achievement and maintenance of a "Good" or "Excellent" rating at the repeat of the Personal Wellness Profile and Fitness evaluation. These tests will be administered every July. Overall fitness will be assessed from combination of these test results. You must take two, one at the beginning of the program and another at the end, to measure results and to earn 100 points . No points will be awarded for only one evaluation. These tests will be administered by qualified health professionals from UAMS, UALR, ADH, etc.

Overall Fitness Rating – Points can be awarded for ratings in the "Good" or "Excellent" category. A personal fitness evaluation will be administered every July. You must take two, one at the beginning of the program and another at the end, to measure results and to earn 50 points . No points will be awarded for only one evaluation. Bonus points could be awarded for improvement. These tests will be administered by qualified health professionals from UAMS, UALR, ADH, etc.

Participation in Extension Challenge. Points can be earned by being an active member of a Challenge team. This is a one-time-per-year event. Seventy-five points are earned for completion of the Extension challenge.

Timely Activity Entry. Points will be awarded for weekly entry of activities in intranet. Seventy-five points will be awarded for timely entry 48 of 52 weeks. (Individuals will report prior week activities each Monday. To receive credit for timely reporting, the report must be completed by Friday of the week due.)

Exercise Activities

The program is designed to allow participants flexibility in choosing activities in which to participate.

Because employees in many areas of the state have limited access to fitness centers and exercise equipment, activities that do not require specialized equipment or skills will be emphasized. However, all types of exercise are eligible. Participating employees can be reimbursed $15 each month for approved exercise activities. These activities include aerobic activities (classes), water aerobics, etc., with proper documentation.

The program uses incentives to encourage employees to incorporate new positive health behaviors or maintain existing positive behaviors. Everyone who achieves a goal to change or maintain a behavior will receive something for his/her efforts.

Employees do not compete against each other. Healthy points are awarded for employees striving to achieve reasonable personal goals. Competition will be directed at positive, health-related goals, not co-workers.
