Journey to Wellness - Graphic of a triangle with a runner, and apple, carrot and grain.Q & A's

When do we start reporting?
Week of July 1, 2005.

How do I report?
Go to Journey to Wellness Homepage at: http://www.arfamilies.org/health_nutrition/journey_wellness/

Then select Logging Your Journey – use your intranet password. This only takes a couple of minutes. Print a copy of Passport to Wellness (under forms) to keep track of your weekly activities. (This is for you – Don’t send it to us)

How often do I report?
Each week report your activities for the prior week. (For instance to report activities for the week of July 1-7-report any day during the week of July 8-14 – select the week you are reporting - ie July 1-7 - from the drop-down window.)

What if I haven’t been to a kick-off yet?
The district kick-off events will not be held until August. If you plan to participate, start living a healthier lifestyle and start reporting week of July 1, 2005.

Can I use the results of blood work and blood pressure done at my Doctor’s office?
Yes, As long as the screening was done within last 45 days or if your next appointment for screening is within next 45 days. Just submit a copy of the results with your Personal Wellness Profile. If you submit results from your health care professional, we can do a private body composition and fitness evaluation at LRSO. These can be done by Russ Kennedy or Easter Tucker (your choice by appointment). (Tests and results are confidential with data kept at UALR)

Will our insurance carrier have access to this data?
No. We are bound by our agreement with UALR Institutional Review Board to hold confidential any and all information collected. Only the two co-principal investigators, Drs. Donna Quimby (UALR) and Russ Kennedy (UA Div of Ag CES) are able to access all data. The information is kept at UALR on a secure computer. No confidential information associated with Journey to Wellness is kept at LRSO.

I don’t want to participate. When do I stop receiving the promotional material?
After the kick-off events we’ll put a Journey to Wellness list together for participants only.

What is the difference in aerobic and anaerobic exercise?
A major distinction among different types of exercise is whether they are aerobic ("with oxygen") or anaerobic ("without oxygen"). Most forms of exercise have components of both.

Aerobic Exercise: This term refers to exercise that requires oxygen from the air to get to the muscles, thus the heart and lungs are forced to work harder than normal. Running, biking, swimming, and skating are examples of aerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise tends to burn a great deal of calories and improves cardiac function more than does anaerobic exercise. However, it is less effective at building strength and muscle mass.

Anaerobic Exercise: This term refers to exercise that requires intense straining for short periods of time. Weight lifting and isometrics (in which one part of the body is used to resist the movement of another part) are examples of anaerobic exercise. Anaerobic exercise relies on energy sources that are stored in the muscle and, unlike aerobic exercise, is not dependent on oxygen from the air. Overall, anaerobic exercise burns fewer calories than does aerobic exercise and may be somewhat less beneficial for cardiovascular fitness. However, it is better at building strength and muscle mass and still benefits the heart and lungs. In the long run, increased muscle mass helps a person become leaner and lose weight, because muscle uses large amounts of calories.
