Nutrition Tips
Cook it Quick!

Did you know that about 70% of the adult U.S. population doesn't decide what to eat for supper until 4 PM or later? If you fall into this category, check out the following tips to speed up cooking time and keep your family from starving before dinner is served!

  • Have "ready-to-eat" healthy foods on hand to munch on until dinner is ready. Examples of these would be: individually wrapped cheese sticks, low-fat yogurt, bagels. Also have raw fruit and vegetables on hand like apples, bananas, grapes, baby carrots, celery sticks, etc.
  • Prepare something the night before to serve as an appetizer while your meal is cooking. Ideas for this might be vegetables and dip, salad, and soup.
  • Recruit family members to help with the cooking. This will help speed up the cooking as well as keep them occupied until supper is ready.
  • Prepare meals ahead of time, like casseroles, and freeze. Warm it up, add a bread, vegetable, milk and you've got a meal!
  • Check out some cookbooks from the local library that feature quick and easy recipe ideas. Get your families input on which recipes to try, then, you can set up a 'cycle menu'. For example, you could choose to repeat 10-12 different evening meals throughout a season.

With just a little extra planning, you can score BIG with your hungry family!
