[Dr. Margaret Harris] When medicines get old, a lot of people just throw them in the trash or flush
them down the toilet. But there's a proper way of disposing medicine and today I
will show you how.
What you will need is all of your unused, unneeded or expired medicines. This
includes liquids, pet medicines, and all of your over-the-counter and
prescription drugs, a plastic bag with a zip top, a small glass of water and an
undesirable substance, such as used coffee grounds, sawdust or kitty litter.
First, pour in all of your medicines into the bag. This one wasn't even
opened yet, but it is expired. Next, pour in a little bit of the water. This
will help dilute the medicine. And then add in some of that undesirable
substance. In this case, I'm using used coffee grounds. Seal the bag and mix the
medicines up. Then throw them in the trash.
Don't forget to take your personalized identifying label off the medicine
bottle before throwing it in the trash.
There are some medicines that should be flushed down the toilet. To get a
list of those medicines, contact your county extension agent, or go to
www.fda.gov.
