Walk Across Arkansas is a program that persuades and motivates people of all ages to make that most important change... to get started. It is a program that is simple, inexpensive, and safe. All you need is a team of up to eight people and a desire to get moving.

Form a Task Force

Make a list of potential task force members (many Chambers of Commerce have a list of clubs, organizations, worksites, schools, medical clinics, etc.)

  • Worksites such as county employees, school districts, banks, and other local businesses
  • School P.E. teachers, student councils, and PTAs or PTOs
  • 4-H Leaders
  • Churches
  • Extension Homemaker clubs and other women's groups
  • Hospitals, clinics, home health agencies
  • Local physicians and other health providers
  • Seniors' Nutrition Site Managers
  • Local health department and Arkansas Department of Health
  • Civic clubs, such as Lions and Rotary
  • Members of local media
  • Local officials

Select date, time, and location for first task force meeting

Identify organizations that might be interested in participating.

Call identified organizations (volunteers can help), explain Walk Across Arkansas program and task force responsibilities, including attend Task Force meetings, promote the Walk Across Arkansas program, recruit captains and teams, and work on one of the following subcommittees:

  • Public promotion, recruitment, and media
  • Kick-off activity
  • Motivation with incentives and prizes
  • Recordkeeping
  • Map
  • Celebration and recognition activity at end of Walk Across Arkansas

  • Website committee (optional). Some counties have found volunteers willing to develop a website where participants can go for information about Walk Across Arkansas activities as well as to enter their mileage.

Ask each organization for name of 1-2 people who might want to be on task force

Verify address and phone number for potential task force member

Call and send follow-up letter to each potential task force member of Walk Across Arkansas confirming purpose of meeting, date, time, and location of meeting
