Money and Marriage
Issue 12. Putting It All Together

Research tells us that many marriages fail due to financial difficulties within the home. This does not have to happen to you. The first 11 Marriage and Money articles can not possibly provide you with everything you need to know about personal finance. They are but an overview of what you need to know about personal finance.

To continue your efforts to manage your money, the Cooperative Extension Service has a wealth of information on the topic of money management. Here are resources to help you.

Detailed

Household Inventory explains why you need to inventory the contents of your home and how to do it. Easy-to-use checklists in the book allow you to complete your household inventory in record time.

Essential

The Family Account Record book is a "must have" for every couple serious about making the most of their financial resources. This 43-page ledger allows you to track your income and expenses and has a place for you to record credit purchases. Order a copy through the County Extension Office.

Helpful

Loss of income may be due to illness, loss of employment or other reasons beyond your control. Living Resourcefully with Reduced Income shows you how to manage when money is tight and times are bad.

Valuable

Important Family Records: What to Keep and Where will help you keep track of your most important financial and personal documents. Use the guidelines to update your records and store in a safe place. This information would be invaluable to family members in the event something happened to you.

Revealing

Use this information to perform a "financial check-up." When it comes to money, prevention is always better than trying to correct problems after they are out of control. A questionnaire is provided in How Good Is Your Financial Health?

Enlightening

A complete explanation of the various types of home insurance policies, including special insurance for renters, and what’s covered under each is what you’ll find in this booklet. Also included is a discussion about "how much insurance is enough?" Contact your County Extension Office and ask for a copy of Home Insurance (MP363).

Sensible

If you believe a will is only for those over 65 with substantial wealth, you must read this fact sheet, What is A Will?

The information will explain the benefits of a will regardless of your age or assets.
